About Our Department

LSU Healthcare Network’s variety of nationally recognized departments and physicians allows us the distinct opportunity of cross-department collaboration. Our Oncology Department utilizes the expertise of multispecialty teams of physicians (coordinated by your LSU oncologist) to offer cancer patients detailed treatment plans created specifically to care for their unique needs. Your personal team of cross-department medical experts utilizes LSU’s access to the most innovative medical advances in cancer research to give you the best care possible.

LSU oncologists believe that patient education plays an enormous role in cancer recovery, and offer numerous patient (and family) education resources. We also offer ongoing care for patients whose cancer has gone into remission, patients with a genetic risk of cancer, and always welcome patients looking for second opinions, or those interested in participating in clinical trials

Our Board Certified Hematologists/Oncologists specialize in the care of patients with cancer and blood disorders. Opportunities for participation in clinical trials provide access to the latest advances in cancer treatment. The LSU Minority Based Community Clinical Oncology Program is funded by the National Cancer Institute. Clinical trials are offered in a variety of different cancer types, including breast, lung, prostate, colon, and kidney Cancers. In addition, LSU is the only regional member of the Aids Malignancy Consortium, which offers clinical trials for HIV related malignancies.

The Section of Hematology/Oncology offers a Geriatric Oncology program for elderly cancer patients. A comprehensive multidisciplinary program, the Geriatric Oncology program enhances existing Oncology services by creating a setting specifically designed to address the unique needs of older cancer patients and their families under the direction of a team providing clinical expertise and research in the area of geriatric oncology. Led by Dr. Thomas Reske, the Geriatric Oncology program offers this patient population a comprehensive assessment to address their treatment plan using innovative assessments tools, with a goal of identifying appropriate level of treatment based on latest literature and research, reducing unnecessary tests and hospital stays, and providing support services to patients and families. The program aims to improve the quality of life for patients and caregivers. The Geriatric Oncology Clinic is located at the St. Charles Avenue LSU Healthcare Network campus at 3700 St. Charles Ave.
